Lands' End Direct Merchants

A Brief History

Our Market

Principles
of doing business

A Brief History

Lands' End is a leading direct merchant of traditionally styled, casual clothing for men, women and children, accessories, domestics, shoes and soft-side luggage. The company's products are offered through regular mailings of its monthly primary catalog and its specialty catalogs. Lands' End is known for providing products of exceptional quality at prices representing honest value, enhanced by a commitment to excellence in customer service. Our reputation, our franchise, and our pledge are built on this simple but strong foundation.

Founded in 1963, Lands' End initially supplied sailboat hardware and equipment by mail. Its early catalogs included a clothing section to complement its sailing products. In 1976, the company began to focus its efforts on selling clothing and soft luggage. By 1979, Lands' End had moved to Dodgeville, Wisconsin, expanded the clothing section in its catalog and began to recruit personnel experienced in the area of fabrics and clothing manufacturing.

The company has been a leader in the integration of consumer advertising techniques with mail-order practices. In 1981, Lands' End began a national advertising campaign to describe its business philosophy and expand its reputation for quality, value and service. The campaign introduced the phrase "direct merchant" to illustrate the company's approach to its business.

Lands' End became a public company through an initial public offering on October 3, 1986. There have been two 2-for-1 stock splits, the first in August 1987 and again in May 1994. Shares are listed on the New York Stock Exchange, ticker symbol -- LE and most common newspaper listing -- landsE.

For the fiscal year ended January 31, 1997, the company had net income of $51.0 million on net sales of $1.119 billion.
