Mount Horeb
An enchanting village set in the scenic countryside
Norwegian settlers left their influence in Mount Horeb, a community northeast
of Dodgeville. Its many small shops are filled with artwork, antiques and carvings
of magical ancient trolls. Several bakeries offer mouth-watering pasteries and lots
of other goodies to tempt your appetite, Mount Horeb is the home of the Mustard Museum
which features about 2,250 mustards.
Just outside of town is a scenic Norse settlement called Little Norway. Tours
are given by costumed guides through this farmstead which was built by Norwegian
immigrants in 1856 and a replica of a Norwegian church that was in the Chicago World
Exhibition over a hundred years ago. Cave of the Mounds, a national natural landmark
is also near Mount Horeb. Here, visitors can explore inside the caverns known for
their variety and color of stalactites, stalagmites and rock columns.
Like so much of southwestern Wisconsin, Mount Horeb has beautiful spots for hiking,
bicycling, swimming and picnicking. The 39.6 mile Military Ridge Bicycle Trail
borders the edge of town and is a favorite for both leisure walkers and avid exercisers.
Skiers will enjoy the close proximity of Tyrol Basin. This ski resort has a range
of runs from beginners to moguls, in addition to some racing programs. Many employees
of Lands' End find the tranquil and friendly community of Mount Horeb a nice place
to comr home at the end of the day.
