Specialized/Technical Opportunities

If you are interested in strengthening your hands-on technical skills, you should explore the opportunities available through our Specialized/Technical intern program. Interns in this program gain a broad view of our catalog operations, coupled with individual and team projects. The majority of internships take place during the Fall and Summer semesters. With the exception of Employee Services, Information Services, and Facility Planning which last approximately eight months (2 semesters). The following internship opportunities within the Specialized/Technical area are as follows:

Corporate Sales

Preferred Degrees: Market Research, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Marketing
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Quantitative assistance through analyzing marketing data
  2. Gathering data from package system for reporting purposes
  3. Mailing execution, primarily through vendor contact
  4. Auditing of results to ensure proper mailing techniques

Creative (Art Direction)

Preferred Degrees: Art, Graphic Design
  Semester Offered: Spring - Summer (Jan. - Aug.)
Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Assisting with layout and design
  2. Coordinating laydown shoots
  3. Editing film and working with layout revisions
  4. Working with design and layout of BRC cards


Customer Acquisition

Preferred Degrees: Market Research, Statistics, Economics, Mathematics, Marketing
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Responsible for the research and analysis of acquisition projects
  2. Analyzing product and media performance
  3. Executing and evaluating plans
  4. Analyzing sales trends


Design

Preferred Degrees: Apparel Design, Fashion Design
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Drawing production flats
  2. Assembly of presentation boards
  3. Sketching and CAD work
  4. Mill sheet specification and process
  5. Acting as a liaison between designers, CAD and color departments


Design Resources

Preferred Degrees: Art, Graphic Design
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Assisting with Art/Design requests outside of the catalog
  2. Assisting with artboards
  3. Computer mock-up work for labeling


Electronic Media

Preferred Degrees: Electronic Media, Graphic Design
  Semester Offered: Spring, Summer, Fall

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Designing layouts for the Internet using the Macintosh as a design tool
  2. Supporting the marketing department with electronic media special projects
  3. Must be proficient with QuarkXPress, Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator and Microsoft Word
  4. Coordinate internal and external creative process and production schedules


Electronic Publishing

Preferred Degrees: Graphic Design, Commercial Art
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Building catalog pages in QuarkXPress from provided materials (layout, copy and photography)
  2. Formatting and building catalog pages consistent with established graphic standards
  3. Scanning transparencies and do clipping paths and color manipulation where necessary
  4. Working with Art Directors, under their direction, to design and correct catalog pages


Employee Services

Preferred Degrees: Human Resource Management, Organizational Communication
  Semester Offered: Summer - Fall (June - Dec.)
Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Assist with various on-campus/on-site recruitment events
  2. Work with recruitment calendar to plan recruitment events
  3. Work with professors and placement offices to further develop relationship between the school and Lands' End


Information Services

Preferred Degrees: Management Information Systems, Management Computer Systems, Computer Science
  Semester Offered: Spring - Summer (Jan. - Aug.)
Summer - Fall (June - Dec.)

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Developing programs and documentation
  2. Coding, testing and debugging programs
  3. Developing specifications and test plans
  4. Install and upgrade work on hardware and software, and problem determination
  5. Provide improvements in applications


Inventory

Preferred Degrees: Statistics, Mathematics, Economics, Business majors with additional analytical coursework
  Semester Offered: Spring, Summer, Fall

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Pre-season planning and forecasting
  2. Learning inventory concepts and strategies for direct marketing
  3. Tracking of manufacturing process
  4. Extensive sales trend analysis
  5. Research and analysis project


Manufacturing

Preferred Degrees: Industrial Management, Industrial Technology, Industrial Engineering
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Document and manulize procedures in the receiving and raw material quality acceptance areas
  2. Document and manualize procedures in raw materials warehouse and cutting room
  3. Review procedures with management and provide recommendations on process improvement


Marketing (Media Planning)

Preferred Degrees: Advertising, Marketing
  Semester Offered: Spring, Summer, Fall

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Maintain documentation on rate negotiations, media insertion orders and ad placement performance
  2. Daily contact with outside media vendors
  3. Maintain cost records on all advertising development and media expenditures
  4. Assist in the creative development process


Media Relations

Preferred Degrees: Public Relations, Journalism, Organizational/Corporate Communications
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Support public relations group with press releases relating to either corporate business or product news
  2. Employee communication projects
  3. Special event coordination
  4. Daily contact with external media vendors


Merchandising

Preferred Degrees: Apparel Merchandising
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Assisting merchants to drive specific categories through product development
  2. Developing competitive analysis for review
  3. Creating spreadsheets for analysis by team members
  4. Preparing business review books


Quality Assurance

Preferred Degrees: Clothing and Textiles, Apparel Design, Apparel Manufacturing
  Semester Offered: Summer

Responsibilities Include:

  1. Specification development
  2. Inspecting and auditing of product
  3. Physical testing of fabrics
  4. Fit evaluation
  5. Research and analysis project


Retail

Preferred Degrees: Retail, Apparel Merchandising, Fashion Merchandising, Business with retail experience
  Semester Offered: Spring, Summer, Fall

Responsibilities Include:

  1. In-store training
  2. Special projects with corporate office based management
  3. Learn the role of an Assistant Store Manager
  4. Management, sales, product training
  5. Inventory management and merchandising techniques
